About the artist:
Antonio Saura, born in 1930 in Huesca, Spain, began drawing and writing as a self-taught artist as early as 1943. In 1953 he moved to Paris and became a member of the Surrealist group. In 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale and in 1959 in Documenta II in Kassel, and in the same year he was shown with Antoni Tàpies at the van de Loo Gallery in Munich. In 1960 he received the Guggenheim Prize in New York, where a year later he exhibited at the Pierre Matisse Gallery. In addition to satirical works on paper, the first etchings and screenprints emerged. After retrospectives at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, in 1964 he, together with Chillida and Soulages, received the Carnegie Prize. From 1967 he wintered in Paris and summered in Cuenca/Spain, giving up painting on canvas for ten years in favor of works on paper. In 1975 the Maeght Gallery in Barcelona mounted a retrospective of works on paper, and in 1977 he participated in Documenta VI in Kassel. In 1979 there followed retrospectives with over 300 works on paper, including at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Kunsthalle of Düsseldorf and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. In 1994 the Museum of Modern Art in Lugano showcased the paintings from 1948-1990, and four years later Antonio Saura died in Cuenca.
Works by Antonio Saura are among others in the Museum of Modern Art/New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou/Paris, the Stedelijk Museum/Amsterdam, the Tate Gallery/London, the National Gallery Berlin, the Vienna Museum of the 20th Century, and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía/Madrid.
