Description from the seller
Here is a superb lot of three creative Kokeshi dolls.
The first is an artisanal piece of the Omiyage (art souvenir) type, dating from the Shōwa period (mid-20th century).
It depicts a character in traditional kimono (geisha/maiko style) on a turned, varnished wood background, accompanied by fine Japanese calligraphy.
Signed with brush and black ink by the artisan Imai Mitsuru / Michi on the lower part of the body.
The traditional red family seal (Hanko) of the Imai family is present under the base.
Dimensions: H 13 x D 7 cm
The second is a superb handcrafted Kokeshi doll created by the famous Japanese master artisan Seifu Gono.
The work stands out for its relief-carved coiffure in the traditional okappa style with a straight fringe and an asymmetrical square, as well as its face of great poetry with closed eyes framed by long, elegant lashes.
The slender body features a gorgeous deep burgundy lacquer enhanced by delicate white and green hand-painted foliage with great finesse.
This is an authentic collectible piece illustrating perfectly the 20th-century Japanese folk art craftsmanship.
The doll is kept in very good vintage condition with its original patina, ideal to complete a collection of refined Japanese art objects.
Dimensions: H 18.5 x D 5.5 cm
The third is a magnificent vintage Japanese Kokeshi doll, turned wood and hand-painted.
Originating from the renowned Naruko artisanal region, famed for its kokeshi traditions. The piece bears beneath its base the handwritten signature of its creator, Yamato.
The piece stands out with an elegant cylindrical body lacquered in deep red, finely decorated by hand with gold Japanese landscapes depicting a bridge and traditional architectures. The face, crowned with a natural wood head painted by hand, offers a very gentle expression.
