Description from the seller
Are you looking for a museum-worthy piece of historic silver with a fascinating story?
This rare 18th-century silver punch ladle (also known as a brandy ladle) is an asset for any serious collector of antique silver. The deep, rounded bowl of the ladle has been artisanally forged from an original silver 'Crown' coin, struck during the Stuart period under the reign of Queen Anne Stuart (1702–1714).
Around the rim of the bowl the historical Latin edge inscription of the coin remains beautifully and clearly legible: "DECUS ET TUTAMEN · ANNO REGNI SEXTO" (Translation: 'For ornament and protection – In the sixth year of reign'). This places the coin exactly in the year 1707, the historic year in which the Acts of Union united the kingdoms of England and Scotland. On the bottom of the bowl is the official master mark GR clearly struck in a cartouche (see macro photo).
The ladle is fitted with an authentic, elegantly turned and tapered wooden shaft that transitions into a characterful knob at the end.
Condition: Given the venerable age of more than 300 years, the ladle is in a particularly beautiful, authentic state with a wonderful historical patina. There is a small, honest age-related flaw (solder/wear spot) at the silver transition from the bowl to the wooden shaft, as detailed in the macro photos. However, this does not diminish the historical value of this unique collectible object.
