Description from the seller
Roger-Lucien CANDES (1907-1972) – Fortified village and its church – Oil signed – 61 × 46 cm
Beautiful painting by the French painter Roger-Lucien CANDES (1907-1972), depicting an ancient village dominated by imposing fortified architecture.
The composition reveals a group of houses with rosy roofs, gathered around a church with a slender tower. In the background, the remains of ramparts and several old buildings rise on a rocky promontory, giving the scene a historical and monumental character.
In the foreground, an orchard and trees with branches still bare open the perspective to the village, in a peaceful atmosphere evoking the early spring.
The artist favors a harmonious palette of ochres, muted greens, pinks and bluish grays. His free and expressive brushwork, coupled with a balanced construction of volumes, gives this work a beautiful depth and a particular sensitivity.
This painting bears witness to Roger-Lucien Candes’ interest in landscapes and villages of character, in a figurative approach marked by a search for light and atmosphere.
The work is signed “Candes” at the lower right.
