Georges Lhermitte was born in Paris in 1882. Trained at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, where he studied notably with the architects Jules Godefroy, Eugène Freynet and Alphonse Defrasse, he obtained his architect’s diploma in 1909.
Parallel to his career as an architect, he developed a pictorial body of work devoted mainly to maritime landscapes, fishing ports and boats along the Atlantic coast. He notably painted the shores of Brittany and Vendée, as well as sites such as Île d’Yeu, Le Croisic and Les Sables-d’Olonne.
His style, inspired by Post-Impressionism, is characterized by a supple brushstroke, soft tones and particular attention to the variations of light and marine atmospheres.
Georges Lhermitte died in 1967, leaving behind an engaging body of work, a testament to the life of ports and the landscapes of the French Atlantic coast.
