Description from the seller
Ludovico Pepe, Historical Memoirs of the Ancient Valley of Pompeii, 1887
Rare and sought-after original edition of Ludovico Pepe's foundational historical work, published in Valle di Pompei in 1887 at the Bartolo Longo Printing and Publishing School. The volume is dedicated to lawyer Bartolo Longo, founder of the Nuova Valle di Pompei.
The work constitutes a historically, topographically and genealogically important study for reconstructing the territorial, feudal and religious vicissitudes of the ancient Valley of Pompeii. Inside there are important iconographic and scholarly apparatus:
Folded genealogical tree of the Piccolomini family.
Table I: Folded topographic plan depicting the "Excavations at Valle di Pompeii (Podere De Fusco)".
Table II: Large folded geographic and topographic map of the "Valle di Pompeii" by Litografia Petruzzelli of Naples, with the delimitation of parish and provincial boundaries and the legend of the historical places.
Half contemporary or slightly later parchment with corners, plates covered in multicolored marbled paper, spine with titles and ornaments impressed in threads.
Solid and well preserved, with minimal signs of wear at the margins. Interior complete, pages well bound; the classic, natural foxing is found on some maps and plates, entirely consistent with the paper type of the era and not compromising the readability of the text or the usability of the folded plates.
Work of notable collecting and local interest, ideal for lovers of Campanian history, Vesuvian archaeology, and nineteenth-century erudition.
In 8°, pp. 151 n.
