Antique 1930 Don Bradman signature cricket bat with original leather ball, made in England by Sykes Horbury, willow blade with a round cotton and twine‑wrapped handle, decorative item with patina and signs of use.
Description from the seller
Antique Cricket bat signature model endorsed by Don Bradman
Marked with Sykes Horbury.
Country wrapped (so it is not a repair but an intentional wrapping with twine.)
Made in England
It is made of willow with a round handle wrapped in cotton and twine.
Over the years it has developed a nice patina.
Great decorative item.
Some signs of use and wear but that adds to the vintage look.
The original ball is made of leather with traditional stitching.
William Sykes (1852–1910) was an English businessman who started a saddler business in Horbury, England.
The business prospered and a few years later he added footballs to the other leather goods it was making.
Sykes subsequently expanded his business by dealing in cricket bats, before moving into their manufacture. Donald Bradman, widely acknowledged as the greatest Test batsman of all time, used bats produced by Sykes throughout his career. in 1929, shortly after Bradman scored the then highest First-Class innings of 340 while playing for New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sykes signed him up to help promote what became known as the Don Bradman bat, or the Autograph bat
Sir Donald George Bradman (27 August 1908 – 25 February 2001), nicknamed "the Don", was an Australian international cricketer, widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time. His cricketing successes have been claimed by Shane Warne, among others, to make Bradman the "greatest sportsperson" in history. Bradman's career Test batting average of 99.94 is considered by some to be the greatest achievement by any sportsman in any major sport.
