Description from the seller
Antonius Matthaeus – De Criminibus ad Libros XLVII et XLVIII Digestorum Commentarius – Naples, 1772 – First Neapolitan edition – 2 volumes
Important and uncommon seventeenth-century work on Roman criminal law by the renowned Dutch jurist Antonius Matthaeus II (1635–1710), professor of law at the universities of Harderwijk and Utrecht.
Published in Naples in 1772, at the expense of Domenico Terres (Sumptibus Dominici Terres), this edition bears on the title page the wording Editio prima Neapolitana, in duos tomos tributa, i.e. the first Neapolitan edition divided into two volumes.
De Criminibus, originally published in Utrecht in 1644, is a fundamental work of European legal-criminal literature. Through the commentary on books XLVII and XLVIII of Justinian’s Digest, Matthaeus develops a systematic treatment of crimes, penalties, and the principles of criminal law, integrating the Roman-law tradition with elements of natural law.
The Neapolitan edition is enriched by the annotations of Michele Leggi, also relating to legal practice and the use of Neapolitan tribunals.
