A singular and bold figure in early 20th-century French painting, Pierre Dumont established himself as one of the most original artists of the Rouen School. Influenced by Van Gogh and Cézanne, he developed a powerful and expressive painting, characterized by generous materiality, vibrant colors, and a remarkable freedom of brushwork.
Founder of the Groupe des XXX in 1907, then a participant in the Société Normande de Peinture Moderne, he actively took part in the avant-garde of his era. Based in Paris, notably at the famous Bateau-Lavoir of Montmartre, he mingled with the great figures of modernity and participated in the Section d’Or movement in 1912.
His Norman landscapes, views of Rouen, and Parisian compositions testify to an exceptional artistic temperament, at the crossroads of Fauvism, Expressionism, and Cubist explorations.
Today sought after for the power of his painterly expression and the originality of his oeuvre, Pierre Dumont holds an important place in the history of French modern painting.
