Description from the seller
Old hydrographic sextant of the Borda circle type, signed "Lorieux Lepetit Succ. Paris", probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, around 1890-1920. This precision scientific instrument was used in maritime navigation and hydrographic work to measure angles between different reference points, notably during coastal surveys and sea observations. French-made in brass and blackened metal, comprising a large graduated arc, an optical telescope, a system of mirrors, adjustment mechanisms, and a turned wooden handle. A beautiful old instrument bearing witness to French know-how in the manufacture of navigation and measuring devices. It presents an authentic patina, traces of oxidation and wear related to its age. Overall condition as per photographs, operation and precision not tested.
Highly sought after in the world of industrial design, scientific curiosities, old medical technology, laboratory optics, steampunk, and rare measuring instruments.
Ideal for collectors, industrial loft decoration, cabinet of curiosities, scientific display case (theodolite, microscope, sextant, compass).
