Origin and Formation – A 14.5 Million-Year History
Moldavite belongs to the tektite family, natural glasses formed during impact events of large extraterrestrial bodies against the Earth’s surface.
About 14.5 million years ago, a massive meteorite impact in the region now known as Nördlinger Ries, Germany, caused the fusion and projection of terrestrial materials into the atmosphere.
During this event, part of the molten material was ejected to great distances, cooling and solidifying before returning to the surface.
The resulting fragments gave rise to moldavites, found mainly in certain regions of the present-day Czech Republic.
South Bohemia is one of the historically best-known localities for the occurrence of these extraordinary natural glasses.
Each fragment thus constitutes a physical witness of a geologic event of enormous magnitude.
Natural Characteristics and Collecting Interest:
This specimen stands out for its elongated shape, olive-green hue, and irregular surface texture.
The visible grooves and striations give it an organic appearance and a distinctive identity, especially appreciated in unpolished moldavite specimens.
Unlike molded or polished gems, natural fragments preserve features of their formation and subsequent surface alterations.
Moldavite is especially valued by collectors due to its unusual geological origin, limited geographic distribution, and direct connection to one of Europe’s best-known meteorite impact events.
A Piece with Cosmic History:
More than a simple natural glass, moldavite represents the link between Earth’s geological history and space events.
Its formation results from the energy released by an extraterrestrial impact, making it of great scientific, mineralogical, and collectible interest.
This small specimen is ideal for integrating into a collection of tektites, rare minerals, natural glasses, or materials related to meteorite impacts.
Presentation and Conservation:
The specimen is presented in a transparent case with original informative label identifying the moldavite and indicating its geographic provenance and approximate age.
The case allows storing and displaying the piece, helping to protect it from frequent contact and handling.
Important note: Photographs are an integral part of the description and show the specimen available for sale. As this is natural material, the shape, irregularities, and surface textures are individual characteristics of the piece. Colors may vary slightly depending on lighting and device used.
An interesting collector’s piece, with approximately 14.5 million years of geological history, combining natural beauty, uniqueness, and an extraordinary origin associated with a meteorite impact.
