In Don’t Look Back Series ‘Matteo’, Dutch artist Swen van der Sangen introduces a bold new body of work that turns convention inside out. Painted directly onto the back of the canvas, the piece exposes what is normally hidden: raw linen, wooden stretcher bars, staples and construction become an integral part of the artwork itself.
Deep ultramarine blue dominates the composition, applied with expressive strokes, splashes and drips. Against this intense backdrop, the classical male figure is rendered in spontaneous black linework. Refined and sculptural yet deliberately unfinished, the figure creates a powerful tension between classical beauty and contemporary rebellion.
The exposed wooden stretcher bars cut straight through the composition, giving the work its architectural and unmistakably raw character. Nothing is concealed or polished away. Instead, Van der Sangen celebrates the structure behind the surface transforming the reverse side of a traditional canvas into the front.
Masculine and unapologetically raw, Matteo has a commanding presence.
