AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

*Title:*
*Italian Pastoral Landscape 18th Century - Roman School c.1790 - Shepherd with Cattle - Oil on Panel 38x30 / 50x60 cm - Period Frame*

---
*Full Description:*

*A Charming Pastoral Landscape from the Roman Campagna, 18th Century.*

We present this delightful and luminous oil on panel from the *Italian School of the late 18th century, circa 1790*, depicting a bucolic pastoral scene of great serenity.

In the foreground, in a rocky and wild spot at dusk, a couple of peasants rest with their small flock. He, with a pointed hat and red jacket, mounted on a donkey; she, with a white blouse and blue skirt, standing beside him. They are accompanied by their livestock: two imposing long-horned oxen, a donkey, goats and sheep drinking from a small pond. In the background, a landscape of bluish hills bathed in the golden light of sunset opens up, with a sky of warm clouds that is pure Italian poetry.

The work follows the tradition of the great masters of late Baroque Roman pastoral landscape, such as *Roos called "Rosa da Tivoli" (Philipp Peter Roos)* and *Jan Both*, whose influence lasted throughout the 18th century. The balanced composition, the warm golden light and the meticulous description of the animals are typical characteristics of this school, highly prized by travelers on the Grand Tour.

The painting shows a high-quality execution for its size, with loose brushwork and earthy, enameled colors typical of the Italian school. An idyllic and Arcadian atmosphere evoking the eternal Campagna.

It is presented in an *elegant Dutch / Italian period frame, in ebonized wood*, with beaded moldings and inner gilt fillet, in excellent condition which magnificently enhances the work.
