This functional Portuguese oil lamp, made entirely of brass and fitted with four wicks, dates from 1850–1930.
Description from the seller
Oil lamp, typically Portuguese, common in the 19th century to the early 20th century, fully functional.
Manufactured entirely in brass, this lamp was used to illuminate homes, often using olive oil of poorer quality or not in good condition for consumption. It includes the original accessories needed for its operation, suspended by chains (as seen in the photos), which are used to insert the wicks, to pull the wicks, and to remove the morrões (burnt wick residues), to extinguish (shutter) and a small vessel for morrões.
This item has been rigorously cleaned and the brass polished and brightened. It is in good condition and fully functional, already equipped with new wicks and ready to use or display. Its light, soft and flickering, is very relaxing, recreating the ambience of bygone eras.
• Material: Brass
• Condition: Excellent / Functional (including wicks)
• Number of nozzles: 4 nozzles
• Height: ~32 cm
• Base diameter: ~12 cm
• Weight: 720 g
The photos are an integral part of the description. One of the figures shows the assembly and disassembly sequence of the lamp. About 1 m of cotton wick will be sent for later replacement.
Usage mode:
- Fill the reservoir with olive oil up to the appropriate level, avoiding overflow.
- Soak the wick before lighting, ensuring it absorbs oil well so the flame catches steadily.
Shipping will be done with protective and secure packaging, with a tracking number.
Warning (in addition to the normal care with flames):
- Never use synthetic-material wicks, nylon, polyester or acrylic. Only natural fiber wicks may be used, such as cotton, flax, hemp or jute.
- Liquid paraffin does not work in these lamps with wicks. Food oils, unlike olive oil, produce fumes and a smell of burning oil.
- Monitor the oil levels; without oil, the wicks burn, producing fumes and an unpleasant odor.
