Description from the seller
For sale: a stunning, museum-quality collection of three heavy, hand-carved Balinese wood sculptures from the early heyday of Balinese art (early Art Deco and post-war flourishing period). All three sculptures are carved from a single solid block of extremely dense and heavy tropical hardwood (very likely Coromandel wood / satinwood) and are in excellent vintage condition with no broken parts. Photos are part of the description. The total weight of this set is no less than 7,183 grams (over 7.1 kg), underscoring the absolute top quality and density of the antique timber.
The collection consists of:
1. A very elegant and minimalist pre-war / early post-war bust with a serene gaze and tight, geometric headdress. The underside shows beautiful, authentic manual chisel marks from a traditional split and a deep patina of age.
• Dimensions: 29 x 23.5 x 8 cm | Weight: 2456 grams
2. Seated Janger Dancer with Fan Headdress (ca. 1950–1970): An expressive and fully detailed sculpted figure of a seated dancer from all angles. Both the front and back feature extremely refined floral patterns in the garments (Kain) and elegantly carved, slender fingers. The underside shows mild manual chisel marks and a natural shrinkage crack.
• Dimensions: 30 x 20 x 13 cm | Weight: 2401 grams
3. Monumental Dancer with Richly Decorated Headdress. The absolute centerpiece of the lot. A very large bust of a Legong/Janger dancer with an exquisitely open-work ceremonial crown (Gelungan) and detailed earrings (subeng). The back is beautifully stylized with geometric slots. The bottom displays a pristine pattern of handcrafted gouge marks and a well-worn patina.
• Dimensions: 37 x 18 x 8 cm | Weight: 2326 grams
A unique opportunity for the serious collector of high-quality Indonesian art or lovers of high-end vintage design. The sculptures are packed with the utmost care, professionally packed, and shipped worldwide with tracking and traceability."
