Description
Here is Burgundy winter as only Hosotte can paint it: a large 1991 watercolor, titled on the back Snow near Vézelay, where the silence of the snow becomes almost audible.
An immense sky, washed with pearl gray and pale blue, occupies more than half of the sheet. At the bottom, the village drifts off to sleep under a white coat: roofs heavy with snow, barely discernible stone walls, a path fading away.
A large bare tree, drawn with a nervy, assured line, structures the whole composition. Behind it, the Morvan hills fade into bands of ultramarine.
Hosotte lets the white of the paper play the role of snow; a few ochre and reddish-brown washes suffice to bring the frozen grasses and shadows to life.
Nothing is overloaded. Everything is conveyed with magistral economy.
It is a generously proportioned piece (62 × 49 cm), rare for a watercolor by the artist, executed in the very year he opened his Saint-Pierre gallery in Vézelay.
It belongs to that fertile period when Hosotte, settled between Irancy and the eternal hill, tirelessly paints snowy villages, the “paths of men,” and winter light.
A work that is both decorative and contemplative, ideal for a contemporary interior as well as a classic living room.
Artist biography
Georges Hosotte, born June 6, 1936 in Paris, is one of the major figures of contemporary French painting. Self-taught, trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, he settled permanently in Irancy (Yonne) in 1964. There, amid vineyards and cherry trees, he found his inexhaustible motif: the seasons of Burgundy, the villages of Auxerrois and the Morvan, Vézelay.
Painter, watercolourist and lithographer, Antral Prize 1970, Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, he exhibited from the 1960s in Paris (Saint-Placide, Soulanges, Place Beauvau) and then opened his own spaces: the Irancy workshop-gallery in 1979 and the Saint-Pierre gallery in Vézelay in 1990. His favored themes — flowering cherry trees, poppies, villages under snow, great oaks — earned him international recognition. His works are in numerous private and public collections. With his son Tristan, he continues this tradition within the Hosotte galleries of Irancy and Vézelay.
A large winter watercolor, signed, titled, dated, in a patinated frame with a real presence. A collectible piece, ready to adorn a wall.
