Description from the seller
Domaine Françoise & Denis Clair – Santenay 1er Cru Clos de Tavannes 2023
A beautifully structured Premier Cru Burgundy from Domaine Françoise & Denis Clair, one of the most respected family estates in Santenay and a producer renowned for elegant, precise and terroir-driven wines.
Founded in 1986 by Françoise and Denis Clair, the domaine began with just 5 hectares of vineyards. Over the years, through inheritance and carefully selected acquisitions, the family expanded the estate to approximately 14 hectares across Santenay and Saint-Aubin. Since 2000, their son Jean-Baptiste Clair has played a key role in both the vineyards and the cellar, continuing the family's commitment to quality while further refining the precision and expression of the wines.
Clos de Tavannes is one of the finest Premier Cru terroirs in Santenay. The vineyard is beautifully situated in the northern part of the appellation, in the continuation of Les Gravières and close to the prestigious Premier Cru vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet, including Morgeot. With its south-facing exposure and classic clay-limestone soils, the site is ideally suited to producing Pinot Noir with both concentration and freshness.
The 2023 vintage is made from a combination of old and younger vines, with approximately two-thirds of the vineyard planted with vines aged 60–70 years or more. These old vines contribute depth, concentration and complexity, while the younger vines bring freshness and energy to the final blend.
Viticulture at Domaine Clair is carried out with great respect for the environment. The vineyards are farmed using sustainable methods, without herbicides or insecticides, and all grapes are harvested by hand. Once in the cellar, the fruit is carefully sorted and 100% destemmed before undergoing a cold pre-fermentation maceration in concrete tanks. Fermentation and extraction are handled gently to preserve the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir.
The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing the structure and complexity of the Pinot Noir to develop while maintaining balance and elegance.
The 2023 Clos de Tavannes is one of the most structured wines in the Clair cellar. It shows a complex and fragrant nose, with concentrated Pinot Noir fruit, ripe red and dark berries, subtle spice and a distinctive mineral character. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, combining impressive depth and concentration with well-ripened tannins, freshness and exceptional length.
A serious and age-worthy Premier Cru Burgundy with the structure to develop beautifully over time. The 2023 is still youthful and promises further complexity with bottle age.
