Nettenboetsers in de duinen van Katwijk is a 19th‑century oil painting in the Dutch School style, attributed to the environment of Johannes Akkeringa, signed by hand, 58 by 66 cm including the frame and sold with its frame.
Description from the seller
Dutch School (19th-20th century) around Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa (1861–1942). Net repairers at Katwijk. Oil on canvas. Overall size including frame 58x66 cm. Size without frame 39x47 cm. The painting and the frame are in good condition with signs of aging. Johannes Akkeringa is known for his depictions of net repairers and fisherwomen in the dunes of Scheveningen and Katwijk.
In a broad dune landscape, several fisherwomen are busy mending and spreading the nets. In the foreground a bent-over woman with a white cap and blue-green skirt forms a striking color emphasis. On the right sits a second net repairer by the stretched net, while to the left and further in the landscape various figures are depicted. The low dunes and a cloudy Dutch sky give the whole a fine atmospheric effect. At the rear left is a man with a horse and cart taking in the nets.
On the back signed: Akkeringa and elsewhere on the stretcher: Net repairers at Katwijk.
Akkeringa lived and worked, among other places, in Katwijk aan Zee and painted the subject of net repairers several times. The presentation of this painting fits remarkably well within his well-known thematic repertoire.
