AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A fascinating four-volume set illustrated with 15 plates in this edition devoted to the discovery of Switzerland in its historical, geographical, cultural, and human aspects, offering the reader an overview of the Swiss cantons, their landscapes, their traditions, and their heritage -

A German-born scholar established in the French intellectual milieu, Depping is devoted to making known a country whose identity has been built over the centuries around autonomous communities, local traditions, and a unique political history -

The work does not limit itself to a geographical description of the territories, but also seeks to convey the moral and social particularities of the populations, their customs, their usages, their dress, and their ways of life -

The historical narratives evoke the events that helped shape the cantons, the struggles for liberty, the alliances between communities and the political transformations that marked the formation of the Swiss Confederation -

G.-B. Depping - Switzerland, or Outline of a Historical, Picturesque and Moral Sketch of the Helvetic Cantons - 1824 - Volumes I, II, III and IV - Al. Eymery -
243 pages, 211 pages, 242 pages and 249 pages

Good condition of bindings, volumes in full smooth sheepskin lightly marbled for the period (volume 1 having a slightly different binding, the leather lighter, more marbled, and the back slightly different), wear from use, a few minor defects on the covers, flaking at some points of the frame border on the boards, restoration of the upper cap and reinforcement of the lower spine on the first board for 3 cm from the cap, heads, corners and joints worn, marbled edges, smooth brown leather back in very good condition with 5 compartments separated by a border and gilt lines, 3 with geometric pattern impressed in relief and 2 with gilt title and volume numbering, gilt tooling well preserved, gilt titles and volume numbers including on a piece of red and green morocco, gilt borders framing the boards -

Good interior condition, some stains, a few rare foxing more prominent on volume 4, but not serious, otherwise no pencil markings, no tears or losses, small vignette on the title page, volumes enriched with 15 plates instead of 16, the map of SWITZERLAND from the first volume is missing, no pages detached, beautiful multi-colored endpapers in good condition, a pleasing copy -
