Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a Japanese bamboo flower basket for the tea ceremony, titled 方円花籠 (Hōen hanakago) on its original signed wooden box (tomobako) and signed 元笠作 (made by Motokasa) with the artist’s seal. “Hōen” means “square and round”, describing the form: the basket rises from a square base, swells into a full, gourd-like body and narrows to a round mouth. The body is finely woven from split bamboo, the base is reinforced with a cross-shaped weave, and the rim is neatly finished. The long arching handle is wrapped with twisted bamboo strips, and small leaf-shaped bamboo decorations are attached to the sides. The warm amber-to-brown tone reflects years of use as a tea ceremony utensil.
The basket comes with its original black water container (otoshi) fitted inside the mouth, so it is ready for fresh flowers. According to the previous owner, it was used in a tea ceremony classroom for displaying seasonal flowers (chabana) in the tea room.
