Aitor Karanka is a Spanish former footballer and coach who is currently the Spain Development Director. During his playing days he played as a central defender, training and making his first-team debut with Athletic Club, in addition to signing for Real Madrid.

As a coach, he began as José Mourinho's assistant at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, although he had previously coached the Spanish national team's youth categories.

On November 13, 2023 he marked a decade as a top-flight head coach, where he achieved several feats and established himself as a manager who clearly bet on homegrown talent. The last team he managed was Maccabi Tel Aviv, and he had previously coached Granada in La Liga, as well as several Premier League teams such as Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest for almost two years, and Middlesbrough FC between November 2013 and March 2017.
