Description from the seller
Kazuo Kamimura – Maria
Original Japanese B5-size first edition / first printing, published by Futabasha on June 1, 1972 as part of the Manga Action Comics line.
Maria is an early major work by Kazuo Kamimura, one of the most distinctive and elegant artists of postwar Japanese manga and later internationally recognized for works such as Lady Snowblood.
Originally serialized in Manga Action from 1971 to 1972, Maria follows Sanjo Maria, a proud and charismatic teenage girl who arrives at a troubled private girls' school in a Rolls-Royce. After confronting the school's female gang leader, Maria quickly becomes a powerful presence among the students. She later meets Kirito, another lonely and rebellious figure, and their relationship develops into a dramatic and tragic romance.
The work combines youth rebellion, sexuality, violence, psychological drama and the changing social atmosphere of early-1970s Japan. Kamimura's elegant female figures, expressive faces and sophisticated graphic compositions are already fully visible here.
This copy is particularly collectible as the original 1972 Futabasha B5-format edition, rather than one of the later reprints or modern editions.
A desirable original early edition for collectors of Kazuo Kamimura, vintage Japanese manga, gekiga and 1970s Japanese visual culture.
