Description from the seller
A Quiet Census
MiLo (1976), Netherlands.
Acrylic on cotton canvas.
Hundreds of short black marks are arranged in horizontal rows across a pale ground. Their repetition gives the painting a measured rhythm, while small differences in spacing, length and texture keep the pattern lively and imperfect. The marks may suggest tallies, signs or a kind of visual notation, without forming a message that can be read.
The restrained black-and-white palette puts the focus on pattern and variation. Seen from a distance, the painting reads as a unified field; closer up, its individual marks and irregularities come forward. The work can be hung in any orientation: vertically, horizontally or upside down. The rows of marks do not prescribe a single direction, so the orientation can be chosen to suit the space.
About the Artist
MiLo (1976) is an Amsterdam-based artist with a background in photography and art studies. Over the years he has sold more than 800 original works, now residing in private collections, hotels, restaurants, and offices across Europe, the United States, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. His practice spans from early Pollock-inspired action paintings to precise geometric compositions, and to the layered, scratched surfaces he often explores today. In his current work, MiLo investigates the tension between construction and erosion, layering and scratching the painted surface until traces emerge. Each work forms part of an ongoing exploration of abstraction, memory, and transformation, making MiLo one of the most prolific and recognizable contemporary artists on Catawiki.
