Lot: Reproduction of Sacred Art of the famous Crucifix of San Damiano
Estimated period: Late 20th Century (circa 1980-1990)
Origin: Italy
Material: Solid shaped wood with applied art print and protective finish.
Dimensions: 39 x 28 x 4 cm
Weight: 700 g
Conditions: Excellent vintage condition, with light and normal signs of aging that enhance its charm and sacred character. (Please view the photos carefully, they are an integral part of the description).
Details and History of the Work
In the sale, a splendid and faithful wall reproduction of the Crucifix of San Damiano, the icon before which Saint Francis of Assisi received the call in 1205 ("Francis, go and repair my house...").
The work faithfully respects the canonical iconography of the original medieval Byzantine style (12th century), characterized by the Christus triumphans pose: Jesus is not depicted as suffering, but upright with open eyes, symbolizing victory over death.
To the sides of the arms are clearly visible the figures of the major witnesses of the Passion (Mary, Saint John, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Cleophas and the Centurion), crowned at the top by the scene of the Ascension.
Structural Characteristics
The artefact stands out for an excellent color rendering that reproduces the warm tones of gold, red, and brown of the original work in the Basilica of Santa Chiara. The structure is made on a thick, shaped wooden support (a thickness of no less than 4 cm), which gives the object considerable solidity and a strong visual impact once hung on the wall. On the back there is a housing for the hanging hook.
A sacred decorative piece perfect for icon collectors, lovers of Franciscan history, or for display in classical settings and prayer spaces.
