Camille Rousseau (1949) — Elegant Ladies on the Beach ~ Deauville, the Spirit of Grand Seaside Resorts

This oil painting on canvas by Camille Rousseau evokes the charm of the great French beaches and the elegance of traditional seaside holidays.

Groups of holidaymakers enjoy a day by the sea. The women, dressed in elegant gowns and wearing hats, sit together or gather beneath parasols, while other figures stand nearby. The sea stretches towards the horizon beneath a vast blue sky delicately touched with lighter shades.

The composition captures the lively atmosphere of the beach and the variety of the figures’ poses. The artist’s free and expressive Impressionist brushwork suggests the silhouettes through lively strokes. The blues of the sky and clothing interact with the warm sandy tones, creating a luminous and harmonious atmosphere.

The title refers to Deauville, an iconic seaside resort associated with elegance and the art of living by the sea. This reference evokes the spirit of France’s celebrated seaside destinations without claiming to identify the exact location depicted.

This painting will appeal to collectors of Impressionist art, beach scenes and nostalgic depictions of seaside holidays. Its contemporary black frame enhances the colours of the canvas while providing a clean and elegant presentation.
