Description from the seller
Maurice Garçon / Bernard Zuber - The execrable life of Guillemette Babin, witch - L'Édition d'Art H. Piazza - 1925
It is the original edition of this work, printed on Japanese paper. It is a particularly rare and sought-after edition, printed in only 80 copies (Japanese paper) (copy no. 79).
Maurice Garçon (1889-1967) was a famous lawyer, essayist, historian and member of the French Academy. Passionate about witchcraft, the occult, and criminal trials, he devoted a large part of his scholarly work to the study of popular and diabolical traditions. He wrote this work in the context of the 1920s, a period during which intellectual curiosity about demonology, esoteric folklore, and witch trials experienced a lively resurgence in France.
Bernard Zuber (1894-1972) was a renowned French painter, engraver and illustrator, celebrated for his bibliophilic compositions and wood engravings. His illustration work is characterized by a Gothic, dark, and highly detailed style, perfectly suited to fantastical narratives and occult themes. For this edition, he employs an ornate framing and medieval-inspired motifs, populated by demonic creatures, skulls and esoteric symbols.
The book recounts the romantic narrative and the dramatic instruction of the trial of Guillemette Babin, accused of witchcraft in the 16th century.
Half-leather binding with corners in good condition, with a spine banding.
128 pages.
