Description from the seller
French travel trunk of the 19th century
– Domed lid and decorative hardware
- W. Walcker Paris
Antique travel trunk of French production, dating from the nineteenth century, characterized by a slightly domed lid and by a rich array of metal reinforcements and fittings. A piece with strong decorative character, expression of the tradition of travel luggage of the era.
The structure presents a brown external coating with a tactile surface, punctuated by shaped metal strips and fixed with domed-headed rivets. The front edge of the lid is embellished by a sequence of ornamental elements with a crenellated and pointed profile, echoed in the vertical bands of the front.
The front retains a central locking closure with a locking device and an upper oval-shaped mouthpiece, with brass-colored finish. Corner blocks and angular reinforcing plates strengthen the junctions, while on the visible side there is a leather handle mounted on mounting supports.
Keys are no longer available.
The compact proportions and the contrast between the brown coating, the dark metals and the gilded-toned gaskets give the trunk a particularly evocative presence.
• Provenance: France
• Era: 19th century
• Type: travel trunk with domed lid
• Visible materials: brown external coating, metal hardware and leather handle
• Height: 45 cm
• Width: 71 cm
• Depth: 39 cm
It shows widespread wear of the coating, abrasions, scratches, patina and oxidation of the metal parts, as well as signs of wear to the visible handle. These elements attest to its history and must be carefully evaluated in the photographs. The operation of the lock, the availability of the key and the condition of the interiors are not documented by the available images.
The leather side handles are no longer usable for transporting the trunk, because they are too worn and fragile. They nevertheless retain decorative value.
An interesting antique accessory, suitable for a collection of trunks and travel objects or for a furniture insertion that enhances its lived surface and decorative craftsmanship.
A careful packing will be prepared, with adequate protections and trackable shipping in Europe.
