Born in 1931 in Comines, Edmond Guillain began painting at the age of thirteen with his first canvas, Poplars by the edge of the Helpe. Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Lille, then at the Académie Saint-Luc in Tournai, he became the pupil of Speybrouck, heir to Flemish Expressionism (Permeke, De Smet), an influence that will remain at the heart of his pictorial language.
Until 1979, he exhibited in numerous salons in France and abroad before dedicating himself entirely to painting. His travels — Morocco, Greece, Spain, Italy, Vietnam, India, Ireland, Central America — enrich his palette and nourish a figurative, luminous body of work, often constructed in bold flat areas and in generous texture.
In 1999, one of his works was acquired by the Royal Museum of Tournai, affirming the institutional recognition of his work.
