A friend of Charles Filiger, he joined Gauguin at Pont-Aven during the summer of 1890 and directly sought his advice.
Marked by the woods of Vallotton and Rivière, he produced his first engraving in 1893 and perfected knife-cut wood engraving on end-grain wood.
His works from 1890 to 1900 were nourished by the innovations of the Pont-Aven School and the Nabis, both in subject matter (sometimes religious, mythical, or historical) and in treatment (cloisonné).
He settled in Lagny (Seine-et-Marne) from 1894 to 1911, where he practiced medicine.
He exhibited with the publisher Sagot in 1902, at the Georges Petit Gallery from 1905, and the book publisher Pelletan commissioned him numerous illustrations for his works.
Attached to his native region, which he would frequent until the end of his life, he drew and etched its many aspects, its men working the land, its landscapes and its villages.
Founding member of the Société de la Gravure sur Bois Originale in 1911, he was elected vice-president from 1920 to 1935.
From 1920 to the late 1930s he visited Italy and Sicily, Spain and the Balearics, Morocco, Portugal, a source of inspiration for his new approach to color.
