AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful oil on panel.

Rudolf Buchner (1894 -1962)

Still life

Was a member of the Vienna Secession.

In the 1890s many young artists turned away from the academies. Independent societies were founded, including in Vienna. The Vienna Secession was founded on May 25, 1897 by nineteen artists and architects who had broken away from the official Vienna Künstlerhaus. They wanted to move away from an emphasis on historic styles, and to focus more on contemporary art. The members of the Vienna Secession wanted a broader definition of art, including applied art as well. According to the group, art could contribute to a better standard of living. Through exhibitions they showed developments in the art world to the public. The Vienna Secession was connected with Art Nouveau. Until 1905 a split occurred within the Viennese Secession between the naturalists and the radicals. This ended in a separation of the radical group, the Klimtgruppe. Also in 1903 the Wiener Werkstätte was founded, a workshop for decorative art, Art Nouveau art and arts and crafts items, which became the basis for Art Deco because of their progressive designs.

The Vienna Secession has had a great influence on modernist movements because of its functional approach, the geometric compositions and the two-dimensional character.

The painting is in prima condizione, frame shows light signs of use.
