Description from the seller
Masterpiece of Furniture Electronics: Radio-phonograph "RR126" – Design by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni – Original Production Brionvega (1967)
We present at auction a fundamental reference in the history of 20th-century industrial design: the RR126 radio-phonograph, designed in 1965 by brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and produced by Brionvega in 1967. This exemplar represents one of the highest expressions of anthropomorphic and modular design, capable of marrying superb acoustic engineering with sculptural presence in domestic interiors.
Design and History: Anthropomorphic and Modular Expressivity
The RR126 project arises from a revolutionary product-architecture insight:
Syntax of Controls and Modularity: The arrangement of tuners and controls on the front panel traces a deliberately expressive, almost facial configuration. The two side loudspeakers are fully swiveling and repositionable: attached to the sides for horizontal listening, stacked over the central body to reduce footprint, or removed to optimize stereo performance.
Mobility and Structure: The laminated wood body is supported by a fused aluminum base on swiveling casters, designed to orient listening and move the device with maximum fluidity in space.
Auction Lot Conditions: Excellent Conservational State (Fully Serviced)
The 1967-era specimen presents in excellent general condition, aesthetically and functionally:
Body and Casings: The panels and lacquered wooden surfaces are intact, free from structural damage or cracks. The lacquers have been thoroughly cleaned with professional products that preserve and enhance the original patina.
Speakers and Components: The perforated speaker grilles, the respective mounting hinges, and the transparent acrylic protective dome over the turntable are intact and well preserved.
Base and Mechanics: The aluminum support frame is solid and stable; the original swiveling casters roll perfectly.
Electronics and Functionality: The entire system — AM/FM radio section and turntable — has been fully checked and serviced by a specialized technician, ensuring perfect operational function and a clean, enveloping sound.
Authenticity Guaranteed: Original Brionvega trademarks and logos present on the central component.
Dimensions
Width: 122 cm (with speakers laid horizontally)
Depth: 37 cm
Height: 73 cm
The Designers: Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni
Among the most authoritative figures of Italian design, the Castiglioni brothers (Achille 1918-2002; Pier Giacomo 1913-1968) built their method on pursuing the essential, formal irony, and strict respect for function. Their works are included in the permanent collections of the world's leading modern art museums.
The Manufacturer: Brionvega
Founded in Milan in the 1950s and historically tied to the Asolo facility, Brionvega is the manufacturer that transformed the household appliance into a work of art. Through collaborations with masters such as the Castiglioni, Marco Zanuso, and Richard Sapper, the company produced historic devices exhibited at MoMA in New York.
