A large brass wall plaque (diameter 54 cm) in the Neurenberg Baroque historicist style, dating to circa 1890-1930, with the inscription "Alheidt San 1706" and a later soldered hanging eye, in good used condition with age patina.
Description from the seller
Large historising brass wall plaque / decorative plate (Ø 54 cm) with tulip motif and inscription "Alheidt San 1706" – Nuremberg style – ca. 1900
Description
Offered: a beautiful, large, worked brass (yellow brass) wall plaque in the characteristic baroque style of the historical Nuremberg plates.
This type of decorative plate was produced around the turn of the century (ca. 1900) as an imposing decorative historism object for traditional interiors.
The plate features very finely hand-hammered repoussé work. In the recessed center (the mirror) lies a large stylised tulip, surrounded by a fine pin-pricked edge.
The broad outer rim is richly decorated with reliefs of various baroque fruits, including melons, grape clusters, pomegranates and floral motifs.
Unique inscription:
At the top of the central mirror there is a clear incised inscription: "Alheidt San 🎕 1706". "Alheidt" is a historical Lower Saxon / Low German variant of the name Adelheid or Alida. Although the year 1706 is stated, this concerns a skilled historising reproduction or commemorative plate from the late 19th or early 20th century (ca. 1890-1930).
On the back there is a sturdy, later-soldered hanger eye.
The object is in a beautiful, authentically aged state with a wonderfully lived-in green-brown patina (oxidation) on the reverse, indicating its respectable age.
The metal is traditionally thinly rolled to permit this refined repoussé work.
