Miesha Tate is an American mixed martial artist and ranks among the most famous pioneers of women’s MMA. Under her nickname “Cupcake” she became known for her excellent wrestling and grappling skills, her physical resilience, and her combative style. Her rivalry with Ronda Rousey contributed significantly to the growing popularity of women’s MMA in the 2010s.
Tate began her professional MMA career in 2007 and fought for Strikeforce and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), among others. Her first major success came in 2011 when she defeated Marloes Coenen by submission and won the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship. In 2013 she moved to the UFC, where she quickly established herself as one of the best fighters in the bantamweight division.
Her greatest career achievement came in March 2016 at UFC 196, when she defeated Holly Holm by rear-naked choke in the fifth round and won the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. She lost the title a few months later to Amanda Nunes. Among her other notable wins are victories over Sara McMann, Liz Carmouche, Jessica Eye, Marion Reneau, and Lauren Murphy.
Her biggest personal achievements include winning the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship, the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship, as well as multiple Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night awards. Additionally, in 2013 she won The Ultimate Fighter 18 as a coach against Ronda Rousey’s team.
After her provisional retirement in 2016, Tate returned to the UFC in 2021 and continued her career. With her two world titles, her spectacular fights, and her significance for the development of women’s MMA, Miesha Tate is regarded as one of the most influential fighters of her generation.
