Maxime Dufour (1928-2016) is a French painter, illustrator and poster designer. Coming from studies combining the fine arts and architecture, he retains throughout his life a rigorously structured artistic line, highly drawn graphic works and a strong predilection for vivid colors. This aesthetic approach allows him to develop an especially impressive and varied artistic output throughout his career. In the second half of the 20th century, his talent is abundantly expressed through commercial advertising and cultural illustration. He designed numerous large-scale advertising campaigns as well as memorable institutional posters, notably for the airline Air Gabon or for occupational risk prevention. His work profoundly marks the realm of popular music from the 1950s to the 1980s. Indeed, he designed the jackets and album covers for icons of French song such as Johnny Hallyday and Eddie Mitchell. Alongside his commissioned works, Maxime Dufour built a remarkable personal pictorial oeuvre. His canvas or board works, often signed only with his first name “MAXIME,” evolve toward abstract compositions and acrylics with strong geometric shapes. Regularly exhibited at public auctions in France, his paintings continue to testify to the richness of his colorful and rigorous visual universe.
