Gouache on paper depicting Eruzione del Vesuvio con figure in primo piano, a nineteenth‑century Neapolitan school work unsigned, with a wooden and gilded frame, 25 cm high by 29 cm wide, produced in Italy and sold by a private owner or dealer.
Description from the seller
Night eruption of Vesuvius seen from the beach with three popular figures in period dress in the foreground.
Period: 19th Century (Ottocento)
Technique: Gouache on paper / cardboard
School / Style: Neapolitan School / Souvenir of the Grand Tour
Conditions: Shows evident and natural signs of aging, including a dense craquelure (cracking of the paint) and a few small areas of color loss on the surface, fully consistent with the age of the work.
Frame: Included, in wood and gilding with a passe-partout (contemporary).
Suggestive Neapolitan gouache of the 19th century depicting the eruption of Vesuvius at night. The scene is made particularly vivid and narrative by the presence in the foreground on the shore of three popular figures dressed in period costumes watching the river of molten lava descending along the mountain’s flank.
The strong contrast between the incandescent tones of the fire and the dark hues of the night sky and sea creates a dramatic, highly atmospheric effect, typical of views produced in Naples for Grand Tour collectors.
