Description from the seller
A Beautiful Summer Day – Heidesdorf with Birkenweg
Wagner – Oil on Canvas, signed
WORK
A summer day in the heath: to the left, behind poplars, two thatched half-timber houses, low German hall houses with mossy roofs. A sandy path forks ahead; to its right a row of birches with a wooden fence descends into the valley, across the slope stands a group of old oaks. Bright summer light, long shadows, strong greens. Large horizontal-format piece, 69.7 x 100 cm. On the canvas frame the title “A Beautiful Summer Day” is penciled.
ARTIST
Signed bottom left “Wagner” in green brushstroke. Without a first name the painter cannot be identified with certainty; therefore we refrain from attributing it. The painting is undated.
Technique: Oil on canvas, stretched on a frame.
Image size: 69.7 x 100 cm
Frame size: 82.9 x 113 x 6 cm
Framed weight: 5,000 g
Signature: bottom left “Wagner”.

ORIGIN
From the Doris Fliegner collection. Doris Fliegner was a teacher in Salzgitter and Helmstedt and collected art all her life, with a focus on the Braunschweig region. Unlike Worpswede or Dachau, Braunschweig never had a formal artist colony; the art life was carried by the Kunstverein (founded 1832), the School of Arts and Crafts (from which today’s University of Fine Arts emerged), artist clubs such as the “Moist Brush” (1881), and civic collectors – collectors like Doris Fliegner. The collection includes works by Braunschweig painters Karl Neuß and Hedwig Hornburg and works by Salzgitter painter Gustav Hagemann. When and where she acquired this painting is not recorded.
CONDITION
With scratches; please view the detail photos: several scratches in the color layer, the canvas is not pierced anywhere. The longest scratch runs along the left edge from the sky down into the tree group, with small light spots in the sky. The back of the canvas is browned and spotted. Not cleaned, not restored.
FRAME AND HANGING
Silver-colored profile frame with inner lip, a small dent on the left outer edge; the frame belongs to the lot. Wire for hanging present; please check before hanging.
SHIPPING
Shipped framed, corners and surface protected, as freight. Pickup in Helmstedt possible.
Frame: Silver-colored profile frame with inner lip; on the left outer edge a small dent (visible in the photo).
