Giorgio Liberale da Udine (illustrator) and Wolfgang Meyerpeck (woodcut) produced the 1604 edition of Pietro Andrea Mattioli's herbarium titled Della lana, a single piece measuring 34 × 23 cm in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Rich large-format woodcut, indeed measuring 22 x 16 cm, with the shearing of sheep, used to describe the virtues and processing of wool.
The drawing was made by Giorgio Liberale da Udine and the wood engraving cut by Wolfang Meyerpeck for the 1604 edition of the famous herbarium by Pietro Andrea Mattioli titled "De i discorsi di m. Pietro Andrea Matthioli sanese, medico cesareo", a work on which generations of apothecaries, botanists and physicians have formed, in which part of the second book is devoted to some animals.
The shepherd is intent on shearing a sheep with the proper scissors, observed by his own dog, while his wife holds in her arms the next sheep to be shorn. The text accompanying the scene tells not only about the shearing, but also about the most opportune way to wash the wool from its sordid greasiness.
The sheet has a beautiful and homogeneous coloration of relatively recent manufacture and shows enviable preservation.
Accurate and prompt sending.
