Psyché alzata da toeletta in legno di castagno, Italian origin, dating 1850–1900, with external dimensions 100 cm wide x 80 cm high x 20 cm deep, internal 60x60 cm, weight about 10 kg, featuring three front drawers with metal knobs and a mercurial/silvered mirror, overall in discreet used condition with probable small missing pieces.
Description from the seller
Psyché (dressing table / resting-table mirror) of great charm and historical value. Early 1900s (between 1900 and 1920). Clearly influenced by Art Nouveau (Liberty in Italy). The curved and fluid lines of the carved lateral buttresses and the vegetal stylizations (such as the incised leaves at the bases and on top of the uprights) are classic elements of this movement.
The piece presents a combination of manual carving (visible in the leaf reliefs and the background punch of the side supports) and grooved geometric work typical of the transition toward Art Deco.
The dressing top includes three front small drawers with metal worked knobs, ideal for containing combs, brushes and jewelry.
The Mercury/Silvered Mirror: The dark spots and the bloom of the mirror are a clear indicator of authenticity. They are caused by the oxidation of the metallic layer (silver nitrate or mercury amalgam) placed on the back of the glass, a phenomenon typical of antique mirrors.
This furniture was not made to stand alone on any table, but was the upper part ("alzata") of a chest of drawers or a bedroom console (the classic lady’s dressing area) measuring 100 cm in width, 80 cm in height and 20 cm in depth. The only flaw is the absence of the upper left corner edge; otherwise, everything is in excellent condition. Shipping will be arranged with professional packing."
