Description from the seller
Description:
Offered: a beautiful, authentic Japanese Kendo mask (Men) from the previous century (estimate: 60s/70s). This mask has a splendid, well-worn appearance and exudes the atmosphere of traditional Japanese martial arts (Budo). An absolute centerpiece for the collector, a lover of Japanese culture, or as a unique focal point in a modern or industrial interior.
Special features & details:
• Authentic & Handmade: The blue fabric protective flaps (men-futon) are finished with traditional hand stitching (sashiko) and dyed with natural indigo (aizome), which creates a gorgeous, subtle fade.
• Historical context: On the inside is still the original fabric name label with the handwritten surname of the first owner: 黒田 (Kuroda).
• Characteristic patina: The sturdy metal latticework (mengane) is made from brass/copper alloy and has developed a beautiful, natural patina over the years. The edges are finished with traditional leather.
• Condition: The mask is in an authentic vintage condition with natural signs of aging (see photos). It is this 'wabi-sabi' aesthetic (the beauty of imperfection and impermanence) that gives the object its unique character.
