Description from the seller
Icona Sacra Devozionale of Saint Lucy – Handmade Painted according to the Ancient Byzantine Tradition
The Author and the Sacredness of the Work
This icon was created by a master iconographer from Monte Sant’Angelo, a Gargano town rich in history and deep spirituality. The author earned his certificate as an iconographer at the historic Ab bey of Pulsano, where the monks directly transmitted to him the ancient and rigorous technique of Byzantine painting, safeguarding its secrets from generation to generation.
The work does not need to be blessed, as it has already been blessed inside the Sacred Celestial Grotto of Saint Michael the Archangel in Monte Sant’Angelo, a place of grace unique in the world for having been consecrated directly by God and not by human hands.
A Window onto the Divine
In the true theological and artistic tradition of Eastern Christian heritage, this icon should not be considered a simple decorative object or a mere ornament: it is a real window onto the divine. Through the hieratic gaze and the sacredness of its symbols, the icon creates a spiritual bridge of prayer, contemplation, and sacred presence within the home where it is welcomed.
The work was executed with the egg tempera technique and natural pigments; the painting was created on a deliberately raw panel to show the genuineness of the material and to evoke the simplicity and essentiality of ancient devotional icons.
Sacred Symbolism and the Theology of Colors
Every detail, symbol, and color present in this icon holds a precise theological meaning:
The Crown of Candles and Laurel: The five lit candles on the laurel crown symbolize the eternal light of faith that conquers darkness and the triumph of martyrdom (symbolized by the laurel). It is a visual reference to the very name Lucia, which means “light.”
The Lit Torch: Held firmly in the hand, the torch represents the living flame of the Evangelical truth, the Holy Spirit, and the unwavering testimony carried to the point of sacrifice.
The Blue Background: The deep, intense blue symbolizes the mystery of heaven, divine transcendence, eternal life, and the cosmic dimension where the saints dwell.
The White and Red of the Robe: The white mantle represents purity, virginity, and the light of the Resurrection; the vivid red of the sash recalls the blood shed in martyrdom and the fire of divine love.
The Golden Halo (Nimbo): The brilliant gold encircling the head symbolizes the uncreated light of God and the holiness that envelops Saint Lucy, projecting her into celestial glory.
