R. López de Heredia, Viña Tondonia 2001 Gran Reserva, 0.75 L bottle from Rioja, Spain; 1 bottle, wrapped in original paper with a fully intact wax capsule and readable label.
Description from the seller
Viña Tondonia Tinto Gran Reserva 2001, declared an Excellent Vintage in Rioja.
History and philosophy: López de Heredia is a family-owned Rioja winery founded in 1877, known for its traditional methods and long aging processes that have remained virtually unchanged for generations. The winery's philosophy centers on artisanal winemaking and extreme patience in barrel and bottle before release.
Aging:
10 years in used American oak barrels in the underground cellars of López de Heredia, with two rackings per year (transferring the wine between barrels to clarify and gently oxygenate).
Subsequently, clarification with egg whites (traditional method) and unfiltered bottling.
Finally, it remains in the bottle for many more years before being released for sale. This aging process, much longer than the minimum required by the Rioja DOCa (at least 5 years in total for Gran Reserva), is characteristic of López de Heredia and explains the great longevity, complexity, and evolved profile of this wine.
98 points Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate
97 points James Suckling
93 points Tim Atkin
Always in a private cellar with controlled temperature.
