Album photos ancien d'un soldat en mission à Malacca britannique 1945/1946 is an original edition silver gelatin print, 18 cm by 24.5 cm, unsigned, featuring military and war imagery with over 100 amateur photographs from a British mission to Malaya in 1945–1946.
Description from the seller
Old album photos of a soldier on a Mission against the Malay Independence Rebels.
- from the UNITED KINGDOM to MALAYSIA dated August 1945 to late 1946 - OP of REIS -
+100 amateur original photographs that seem to be commented in Dutch.
European soldiers tasked with reinvesting Malaysia just after the surrender of Japanese occupying forces in September 1945.
It appears the author of this photo album was a Radio Operator.
This is an interesting historical testimony through his photographs and his elegant handwritten comments in Gothic lettering:
- Embarkation at LIVERPOOL on 3 October 1945,
aboard the steamship "STIRLING CASTLE", stopover at Suez, disembarkation in SYDNEY.
Then by plane to GEORGE TOWN, PENANG on 26 November 1945.
- In MALAYSIA, photos of military or civilian buildings,
a Chinese Art School, cinemas & Western hotels, temple & mosque, etc.
- photos of inhabitants, landscapes and indigenous nature,
down to a genuine snake skin glued onto a page.
- photos of soldiers in action, machine gun fire, radio operators, etc.
Training or combat against communist independence fighters,
extremist attacks, Officers of the 3rd B.G.I. etc.
Apparently the mission of this Dutch-origin soldier would end in late 1946.
PHOTO ALBUM in size 245 x 180 mm -
+100 vintage gelatin silver prints widely annotated.
Photos of various formats 140 x 90 mm - 135 x 80 mm - 85 x 55 mm.
- VERY GOOD OVERALL CONDITION - wear appropriate for cardboard covers.
The photos and pages are all very well preserved. One photo missing.
Well-laid out and superbly captioned by hand in Gothic type.
Notes:
September 4, 1945 – Japanese occupation forces in Malaya surrender to the Allies at Penang,
signing the Penang surrender document aboard HMS Nelson.
September 12, 1945 – British Military Administration (BMA) is established in Kuala Lumpur.
October 17, 1945 – The National Malay Congress (Penyataan Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya) is created.
In 1946, the British unite the Malay states and the British Settlements of Malacca and Penang
into a single colony, the Malayan Union.
