Description from the seller
This auction features a rare and historically significant source from the Thirty Years' War, titled Apologia Civitatis Imperialis Colmariensis, printed locally in Colmar, Alsace, in 1645. This tract serves as the official defense of the Free Imperial City, justifying its ancient privileges, its adoption of Lutheranism, and its strategic military decisions. It details Colmar's surrender to Swedish Field Marshal Gustav Horn in 1632 and its subsequent transition to French protection under King Louis XIV (1634/1635). The volume is enhanced by a beautiful full-page copper-engraved title page by Hans Brunn, featuring personified virtues and a historical cityscape. The main text is in German Schwabach with Latin marginalia, concluding with a printed Errata page.
The book is housed in a modern, beautifully crafted full leather rigid binding of a light cream color, which is in pristine and firm condition. The spine features a red leather label with gilded lettering reading APOLOGIA COLMARIÆ 1645. As part of the fine rebinding work, it includes new premium endpapers made of handmade paper with blind embossing (eight blank leaves at the front and eight at the back). Internally, the historical text block is entirely complete and perfectly legible. Except for the clean engraved title page, the leaves show various degrees of age-browning throughout; however, both the paper and these natural flaws appear well-stabilized, indicating professional conservation, restoration, and deacidification.
Regional imprints from Colmar during this era are extraordinarily scarce, making this a highly desirable piece for European history collectors.
The book will be very carefully packaged and shipped promptly via a reliable international courier.
