ABSTRACT
The Nuttelyck Huys-boeck is a posthumous collection by Jacob Cats, conceived as a reflection on man and the different stages of life. The title announces the main themes: the human condition, death, the education of children, and what may be useful for living long and in good health. The journey is summarized in the formula “from the beginning, in the middle, to the end,” which gives the work the character of a meditation book and practical advice. This second edition from 1769 is complete with the engraved frontispiece hand-colored and the 25 illustrations in the text, also hand-colored.
WHY TO BUY
A posthumous collection by one of the most popular authors of Dutch literature, published more than a century after his death. The first and second editions both appeared in 1769; according to available description, they seem to be the only editions of the work. The exemplar combines literary and visual interest: the frontispiece and the 25 figures preserve an ancient manual coloring, while the leather binding with impressed frames on the boards gives it the appearance of a book intended for reading and domestic keeping. The completeness of the images is a distinctive element for those who collect illuminated books from the 18th century.
MARKET VALUE
Indicative market value: 500–600 euros. The assessment takes into account the 1769 publication, the completeness of the figurative apparatus, the hand coloring, and the leather binding.

CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
The title describes the work as a “reflection on man” and indicates its broad path: from life and death to the education of children, up to advice for preserving health. The formula “from the beginning, in the middle, to the end” presents existence as a journey to be considered in its different ages and conditions. It is a coherent perspective with Cats’s fame, an author valued for writing capable of bringing moral reflection closer to daily life. The posthumous publication of the volume testifies to the persistence of his audience in the 18th century. The hand-colored figurative apparatus adds a decorative component and makes this exemplar particularly attractive for a collection of illustrated books.
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Jacob Cats (1577–1660) was a Dutch poet, jurist and statesman. He was born in Brouwershaven and died in The Hague. His literary output, often oriented toward moral reflection and domestic life, enjoyed wide diffusion in the Netherlands. The author’s popularity was such that he earned the nickname “Vader Cats,” meaning “Father Cats.” The posthumous publication of the Nuttelyck Huys-boeck in 1769 shows how his works continued to be offered to readers long after his death.
PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
The Nuttelyck Huys-boeck appeared posthumously in Leiden in 1769, at Hendrik van der Deyster. In the same year, the first and second editions were published; the present copy belongs to the second. The available bibliographic description indicates that these appear to be the only editions of the work. The volume gathers themes aimed at readers interested in conduct, family, and health, and it fits into the long eighteenth-century circulation of Cats’s production.
