Four-volume in-12 edition of Lettres choisies de feu Guy Patin by Guy Patin, bound in full calf leather with a gilt-ornamented spine, Cologne 1691–1692, in the original French.
Description from the seller
Guy Patin (1601-1672). Selected letters of the late Guy Patin. Cologne Pierre du Laurens, 1691-1692, (10) ff., 308 pp., 374 pp., 342 pp., 250 pp.
4 volumes in-12 (155x95 mm) full calf, spine with raised bands gilt (bindings of the period). Wear and rubbing on the boards and spine, loss on the lower hinge of the first board on volume III. Volume IV, without a title page, is smaller in size compared to the other three. Interior fresh.
New edition adorned with a frontispiece in volume I and increased by more than 300 letters compared with the previous editions. This edition is complete in 3 volumes; a fourth volume was added, without a title page, in a similar binding, containing 102 letters.
Physician of the Faculty of Paris and professor at the Royal College, Guy Patin discusses in his letters his colleagues and the medical controversies of his time, but also the books he reads, the scholars he knows and the news circulating in intellectual circles. The names of physicians such as Riolan and Guénaut, as well as those of scholars such as Saumaise and Scaliger, appear in the text. The correspondence thus blends professional information, personal judgments, anecdotes and comments on the learned and political life of the 17th century.
