Pierre François Claude Jean Aujame, called Jean Aujame, was a French painter and lithographer born on May 12, 1905 in Aubusson (Creuse) and died on July 5, 1965 in a road accident in Chemilly (Allier). Raised in a region famous for its tapestries, he developed very early a unique sensitivity to forms, textures and color. A self-taught artist, he settled in Paris during the 1920s and began to frequent the circles of the Montparnasse avant-garde. His distinctive style quickly found its place between expressive figuration and restrained abstraction, often described under the term “mineral lyricism.” As early as the 1930s, his works of stormy landscapes and brute expressivity made him known to the general public and to critics. He regularly exhibited in prestigious Parisian galleries such as Galerie Jeanne Castel or Galerie de France. Jean Aujame actively participated in the capital’s major artistic events, notably the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. Marked by poetic symbolism with expressionist overtones, his work gives central prominence to nature. The earth imposes its textures, its rhythms and its muted colors at the heart of his paintings and his lithographs. He spent part of his life painting in the Cantal and the Puy-de-Dôme, drawing inspiration from the reliefs of Auvergne.
