Description from the seller
Painting titled "The Traveler of the Port" - 2026
The scene depicts a seascape framed between two imposing vertical yellow structures, reminiscent of port pylons or the walls of a cove, with its colorful reflections on the water.
A dark, deep stretch of water vibrantly reflects the bright colors of the shoreward architectures. On a quay of blazing orange, a female silhouette dressed in a white dress and a yellow hat contemplates the open sea. To her right and left, vegetation and red, pink and black buildings frame the opening toward the sea.
The style is largely inspired by Fauvism through the use of pure, arbitrary colors applied in frank flat areas. The colors do not seek to mimic reality scrupulously but to convey a luminous emotion.
A expanse of ultramarine blue beneath a night or twilight sky of the same blue. A small white sailboat navigates near a distant shore.
The forms are simplified to the strict minimum, without superfluous anatomical or architectural details. The brushwork is visible, sometimes gestural, especially in rendering the reflections on the water surface.
Painting by Breton artist Yves Decaudan - 1954
Yves Decaudan’s work is part of a colorful figurative lineage, heavily influenced by Fauvism and the Pont-Aven school, with a particular attachment to coastal scenes of Brittany.
His works regularly depict moments of calm, reading, or outdoor daydreaming in a maritime or Mediterranean setting where time seems suspended.
The artist’s work is characterized by expressive, poetic figuration, driven by a keen sense of color and the synthesis of forms. The artist favors blocks of pure, intense colors—like this deep blue contrasted with bright red—creating an immediate, luminous visual tension.
The scene elements are outlined and simplified, moving toward the essential without lingering on anatomical detail or strict realism, which brings his work closer to Fauvism or art posters. His subjects, often solitary and maritime, convey a sense of stillness, serenity, or suspended daydreaming in time.
Through backgrounds worked with texture or speckled with light touches, he establishes a poetic depth rather than a geometric one.
Paintings exhibited in numerous private collections in Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania, canvas shown at the Paris Autumn Salon - 2022
