A complete 25‑volume Dutch history by Jacobus Kok, Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden, published by Johannes Allart between 1784 and 1795 in original Dutch, with softback bindings, hand coloured illustrations and fold‑out maps, totalling about 3500 pages, in good condition.
Description from the seller
An extraordinarily rare, complete 25-volume set of the landmark 18th-century Dutch historical work Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden voor de vaderlandsche jeugd ("Histories of the United Netherlands for the Patriotic Youth"). Published in Amsterdam between 1783 and 1795 by Johannes Allart, this extensive work provides a detailed narrative of Dutch history from antiquity through the late 18th century.
Illustrations & Cartography:
The set is rich in visual historical documentation. Each volume contains numerous finely detailed copperplate engravings depicting crucial historical scenes—such as political events, battles, and riots—designed and executed by master engravers Jacobus Buys, Reinier Vinkeles, and Cornelis Bogerts.
A major highlight of this set is the presence of the original folding map in Volume 3: "Kaart van Nederland en woonplaatsen der oude volkeren" (1783) by A. van Krevelt, featuring delicate, authentic hand-coloring.
Bibliophile Condition:
Finding all 25 volumes intact and unified is exceedingly difficult. What makes this set particularly collectible for bibliophiles is its unbound, original publisher's state. Rather than being rebound in leather, these volumes retain their original 18th-century blue/grey paper wrappers just as they left the printing shop over 230 years ago. A rare and authentic historical ensemble.
