French-language first Belgian edition of A la grâce de Dieu, ou Les Orphelins de la Savoie by Charles Eugène Honoré Richomme, a 156-page hardback published in 1853 by J. Casterman et fils in Tournai.
Description from the seller
RICHOMME (Charles Eugène Honoré)
A la grâce de Dieu, ou Les Orphelins de la Savoie.
Tournai: J. Casterman et fils, 1853.
First Belgian edition. A short story for young people. Publisher's binding, lithographed paper over stiff / hardback boards. This is somewhat soiled and darkened, but still attractive. Wood-engraved title vignette and 8 charming lithographed figures in colour in 4 plates outside the text. (The plates seem to have hand coloured elements).
Not in Vicaire. Missing from Embs & Mellot, Livre d'enfants et de jeunesse and Gumuchian. This Belgian edition is missing from the BnF. There was a French edition published by Amedée Bédelet in 1840 and then further editions after this edition.
Good copy. Reinforcement with archival tape to the front hinge. Owner's annotation to the front end paper. This is quite sweet, it states “Voulez-vous savoir mon nom, regardez à p[age] …” In English: “Do you want to know my name? Look at page …” Faintly in pencil you can read 37. If you turn to that page, you can find a scribbled hand (possibly mirror writing or in shorthand?) but also Madame Charlotte Malberg has had the title "madame" crossed out. Presumably the owner of the book was called Charlotte Malberg. This is a traditional French schoolchild’s ownership game. Rather than writing their name on the endpaper, the owner sends the reader on a hunt to a page further in, where the name is hidden.
Pages are somewhat darkened with a little foxing, plates have foxing to them. A scarce item. We can find only one other copy available. 154 [ii] pages. 14cm x 20cm. We cannot find this edition in WorldCat / OCLC.
The title was the biggest French popular song of the 1830s and 1840s.
The story is about Savoyard children leaving the mountains for Paris.
In a traditional French schoolchild’s ownership game, to the front end paper the inscription tells the reader to go to a page to read the owner’s name. When you get there, there are shorthand or mirror writing clues, and perhaps a hint on the opposite page.
J. Casterman et fils, Tournai, later went on to become Herge’ publisher for Tintin.
PLEASE NOTE - WE ARE AWAY AT A BOOKFAIR FROM THE 28TH OCTOBER UNTIL THE 11TH NOVEMBER - SO WE PROBABLY CANNOT SHIP UNTIL OUR RETURN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.
