Nu vert
Michel Suret-Canale — 2026
Oil on canvas — 55 × 75 cm
With Nu vert, Michel Suret-Canale offers a singular composition, at the boundary of intimacy, dream, and disturbing strangeness.
A nude woman, with an enigmatic face, stands in a dark interior, accompanied by a cat. Behind her, a mirror, a bottle and a few brushes evoke the painter's familiar workshop universe. Yet, this apparently ordinary scene exudes an unusual atmosphere, almost unreal.
Pale undertones, traversed by turquoise reflections, contrast with the depth of blacks and the unexpected glow of pink. The deliberately loose proportions, the indecipherable expression of the face, and the silent presence of the cat contribute to create a sense of dissonance.
The work evokes what Freud referred to as Das Unheimliche, "the uncanny": that moment when the familiar suddenly becomes mysterious.
The singularity of this painting lies precisely in its dissonances and apparent imperfections. The artist, who favors improvisation and leaves ample room for the unexpected in his work, chose to preserve the integrity of this composition, without seeking to attenuate its strangenesses.
This is not about pursuing conventional beauty or a seductive representation of the nude, but about letting an image exist whose ambiguity is its very identity.
This work testifies to a free and decidedly contemporary conception of figuration, in which painting can sometimes lead its author beyond his initial intentions.
Original and unique work, entirely handmade, signed and dated 2026.
Technique: oil on canvas stretched on a frame.
Dimensions: 55 × 75 cm.
Year: 2026.
Artist: Michel Suret-Canale, contemporary French painter, Doctor in Arts and Art Sciences.
I have intentionally avoided presenting this painting as a masterpiece or trying to justify its particularities by technical virtuosity.
Original unique work. Shipped with its certificate of authenticity and signed valuation (see photo)
